My Christmas Eve

I must start to tell you a little bit of what we do the day before Christmas (23rd December). After dinner we decorate our tree. We always do this together with our kinds and it's very nice.

After a while the kids goes to sleep.

Just before midnight we always listen to Swedish radio. They use to play the Swedish version of O Holy Night, called ”O Helga Natt”, with Jussi Björling (a Swedish tenor who lived from 1911 to 1960). This is a traditions which means a lot to me and my husband John.

The kids always runs to look at the TV when they wake up early 24th December. It's a lot of programs for the children the whole day.

When I and John were kids we only saw Donald Duck and his friends one day a year, 24th December on Swedish TV. Our kids is used to see Disney-programs during the whole year. The program with Donald Duck three o'clock in the afternoon at Swedish TV means more to me and John than it does to the kids...

About four o'clock it has been so dark outside and our Santa (we call him "nisse") is coming. You can read more about that on the page about Santa.

John is always going to the graveyard to light candles on the graves to our relatives. The graveyard is full of burning lights and it's very beautiful.

We eat dinner about five o'clock. We eat pork and we all love it. We always have creamed rice with red fruit sauce for dessert.

After we have finished our dinner, it's time to open our gifts. The kids always recieve two gifts each from Santa, but the other gifts is under our Christmas tree. We always find one by one of the gifts and read who it's from and who's the one to recieve it. This is very nice. It's always a lot of gifts under our tree because we are never alone the Christmas Eve. My grandmother and one of my uncles are always together with us. I got a brother and a sister, they have both they own families in Oslo. My parents are visiting us every third year. John's parents and one of his brothers use to visit us every second year. .

Later in the evening we have cookies and coffee. The older days they used to say every house must have at least 7 kinds of cookies. I don't use to bake so many kinds, but John's mother always gives us some cookies and we use to get more than 7 kinds :o)

After our visitors have gone home to their own houses and the kids have gone to sleep, John and I use to listen to music. It's nice to relax after a nice celebrateing of the Christmas Eve.
