Santa
Claus "nisse"
I
will use the Norwegian name "nisse" in my text. "Santa
Claus" and "Father
Christmas" is not the ones this page is about. This page is about our
Norwegian "nisse" and that's why I will call him
"nisse". I hope it's okey to you :o)
"Nisse" means one Santa Claus and "nisser" means several.

In
Norway we only had nisser with red stocking caps, but in
December 1999 we also got nisser with blue stocking caps. Every
year from 1st to 24th December we have special programs on the TV
for the children. In 1999 came a new program called "Jul i
Blåfjell" (means "Christmas in The Blue Mountain").
The blue ones lives in The Blue Mountain. They are very kind and
are worried about what we people do with the nature. Since
December 1999 the childrens in Norway love to wear blue stocking
caps. You can also buy nisser with both red and blue stocking
caps in stores. Here you can see a picture of Ida and her doll,
Rose, taken October 2000. |

The
older days they tought a nisse was a little man living in the
cowhouse. He used to take care of the animals in the cowhouse.
The people on the farm had to have a good relationship to the
nisse. They used to give him porridge on the Christmas
Eve.

Our
nisse
I
live in a housing estate and not on a farm. We live on the top
of the housing estate and have the wood behind our house. When
it's getting dark on the Chrstmas Eve, the nisse use to come
from the wood. We always look through the window and are waiting
to see him. (In many places the Dad never meets the nisse, but
not in our house...) Our nisse is very old and you can see him
on this picture.
Our
children have been older and the year 2001 was the last year our
nisse came to our house.

To
get gifts from the nisse i a tradition we got in Scandinavia in
the 1900 century.
I
love to decorate my house with nisser and other tings before
Christmas. My Christmas-city is the first thing i put on its
place (I've made a page with my Christmas-city).
